Memorial Soundtrack – Himawari

Chinatsu (narrating):
This is a story from a little while before Shooter Fest.
It was lunch break – everybody’s favorite time of day.
And Chinatsu was doing what she always does: munching away on her bento with Mia and Tsumugi.

Chinatsu: Hmm-hmm, hmm-hmm, hmm-hmm-hmmm♪

Tsumugi: You’re in quite a good mood. Did something happen, Nacchi?

Mia: Nya-ha-ha. Let me guess. I’ve got it – today’s bento has your favorite, hamburg steak, doesn’t it?

Chinatsu: Ding-dong-BZZZT!

Mia: Huh? What’s that supposed to mean? Right or wrong – which is it?

Chinatsu: Ta-daaa! Hamburg steak with melty cheese!

Mia: See? Just like I said.

Chinatsu: But that’s not the only reason I’m all bouncy! Listen, listen – on my day off the other day, something super fun happened!

Tsumugi: What a coincidence. Actually, I had an interesting experience myself.

Mia: Wait, wait – Nacchi and Tsumurin?

Tsumugi: Oh – from that reaction, don’t tell me you did too, Mia?

Mia: Ummm… m-maybe? It’s not that I don’t sort of feel like it might possibly be interesting…

Tsumugi: So which is it? Honestly, why are you so unsure about your own story? Now I’m even more curious.

Mia: W-well, anyway – let’s all take turns telling them.

Chinatsu: Okaaay! munch munch munch Me, me, me! Chinatsu’ll go! Chinatsu goes – munch – first! munch munch munch

Tsumugi: Please pick one – eating or talking. Honestly, your manners are terrible.

Mia: Heh heh, looks like she’s just bursting to tell us. Go ahead, Nacchi, you start.

Chinatsu: Okaaay! Um… ummm… munch munch munch … gulp! Thanks for the meal!

Chinatsu: So on my day off, Chinatsu went to the amusement park with Mom and Dad! And, and – we all went into the haunted house, and Chinatsu got lost! Ehehehe.

Tsumugi: No – why are you laughing about getting lost in a haunted house? I fail to understand.

Chinatsu: Because there was this mysterious onee-chan there!

Mia: Huh? What’s this about an onee-chan? No fair, only Nacchi gets one. I wanna go nya-fu nya-fu too.

Mia: Hold on – don’t tell me this onee-chan was actually… a ghost?

Tsumugi: N-no. No. Scary things are forbidden.

Chinatsu: Ehehehe.

(flashback)

Chinatsu: Ahahaha! It’s pitch black, I can’t see anything. Dad? Mom? Where are you, where are you?

Mysterious girl: Hey – are you lost too, by any chance?

Chinatsu: Ah – s-so you’ve appeared, you ghost! Chinatsu will take you down! Super Chinatsu Attack!
Hiyaa! Come and get me! Chinatsu won’t lose!

Mysterious girl: Eh – ow, ow, ow! Wait a second, I’m not a ghost!

Chinatsu: Eh? W-what? Oh no – did Chinatsu make a mistake?
O-onee-chan, I’m sorry! It was dark and I couldn’t see – I’m really, really sorry!

Mysterious girl: No, no. I called out to you from behind all of a sudden, so of course I startled you. I’m the one who should apologize.
Um… Chinatsu-chan, is it? Did you get lost?

Chinatsu: Mm-hmm. Dad and Mom went off somewhere.

Mysterious girl: Ah, I see. Um, well… actually, I got startled by a ghost and tripped, and when I looked up I was all by myself.

Chinatsu: Ehehe, I see – so onee-chan’s scared of ghosts! That’s okay, come with Chinatsu. If a ghost shows up, Chinatsu will beat it up for you!

Mysterious girl: Ufufu, how reliable. Well then, I’ll be counting on you.

Chinatsu: All riiight, let’s go, full of spirit! Onee-chan, here – let’s hold hands.

Mysterious girl: You’re amazing, Chinatsu-chan. It’s this dark and you’re not scared?

Chinatsu: Not at all! A place like this is no big deal! Ghosts, the dark – none of it scares me one bit-

(sound)

Chinatsu: Hyaa! Th-this sound, could it be-
Hyaa! Thunder!

Mysterious girl: Whoa, that startled me. That was a realistic one, wasn’t it.

Chinatsu: U-uuu…

Mysterious girl: Huh? Chinatsu-chan? You’re all curled up – what’s wrong? Did you get a tummy ache?

Chinatsu: N-no! Onee-chan, you too, quick! You have to hide your belly button or it’ll get taken!

Mysterious girl: Belly button?

Chinatsu: The thunder-man munches up your belly button! So hurry, you have to cover it with your hands!
Waaah! Nooo! Don’t take Chinatsu’s belly button!

Mysterious girl: Chinatsu-chan – oh, I see. There, there. It’s all right. I’ll protect you.

Chinatsu: Eh?

Mysterious girl: You’re going to protect me from ghosts, aren’t you? So I’ll protect you from the thunder-man.

Chinatsu: Onee-chan…

Mysterious girl: Here – can you stand? Let’s hold hands again and do our best.

Chinatsu: Mm. Chinatsu will do her best.

Mysterious girl: Ufufu. Good girl. There, there.

Chinatsu: Ehehehe. Onee-chan’s hand is gentle and warm. Somehow… onee-chan, you’re just like that person.

Mysterious girl: Hm? That person?

Chinatsu: Mm-hmm. Someone who works really, really hard, and just being with her makes you smile.
And, and – no matter what happens, that person absolutely, absolutely never gives up.
She’s really, really cool, and she’s a super cute person.

Mysterious girl: Ufufu. You’ve cheered right up, Chinatsu-chan. You really love that person, don’t you.

Chinatsu: Mm-hmm. I love her.
But… a bunch of stuff happened, and now I have to do an ongeki against her.

Mysterious girl: That’s wonderful! How lucky – getting to ongeki with the person you admire.

Chinatsu: Eh? Lucky?

Mysterious girl: Of course. You get to ongeki with someone you love. That’s so exciting.

Chinatsu: But what if it turns into a fight and she ends up hating me?

Mysterious girl: That won’t happen. Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely not.
Because an ongeki is an ongeki. It’s completely different from a fight.
You give everything you have, you receive everything the other person has, and at the very deepest place, the two of you come to understand each other. That’s what an ongeki is.
See? Isn’t it wonderful?

Chinatsu: Ongeki… wonderful…

Mysterious girl: That’s right. So you have to ongeki with all your strength, Chinatsu-chan, or that person will be disappointed. If you want to get closer and closer to her, you have to ongeki lots and lots.

Chinatsu: Closer…
I get it! Ongeki is amazing!
Thank you, onee-chan! Chinatsu’s gonna give her all at the next ongeki!

Mysterious girl: Mm! I’ll be cheering for you!

Chinatsu: Mmm… but onee-chan, how come you understand Chinatsu so well?

Mysterious girl: Because I’m the same. There’s someone I’ve admired for a long, long time too.

Chinatsu: Eh? Onee-chan too? Who, who? What’s she like?

Mysterious girl: Ehe – Primera-sensei, the person who does the best ongeki in the whole world.

Chinatsu: Really! So onee-chan does ongeki too.

Mysterious girl: Mm! Someday I want to ongeki with you, Chinatsu-chan!

Chinatsu: Really? Chinatsu wants to too!
It’s a promise! Pinky swear!

Chinatsu: Oh – wait, onee-chan! Look! Look, look! Look at that!
There’s the exit over there! Yaaay! That went by in a flash, didn’t it!
Huh? Wait, wait? Onee-chan?
Heeey! Where’d you go?
Hmmm?

Chinatsu: And that’s the end of Chinatsu’s story!
I really want to meet that kind onee-chan who helped me again someday.
And when I do – Chinatsu’s definitely gonna ongeki with her! Ehehe, I can’t wait!

Mia: Aaaah…

Tsumugi: Next is my turn. What is that reaction? Weren’t you supposed to have an interesting story?

Tsumugi: Ah – don’t tell me. You lied.

Mia: I didn’t lie! I really do have one! It’s just… my memory’s a bit hazy.

Tsumugi: When it’s hazy – then, fish!

Mia: Munch munch munch munch. Fish for the DHA?

Tsumugi: It does indeed improve memory, but it only works if you eat it regularly-

Mia: Ah, it’s coming back! Coming, coming, coming!

(flashback)

Mia: Kunitachi – I finally made it! This is that legendary sacred ground, the phantom dagashi shop.

Rumor has it they’ve got something here that surpasses fresh fruit – an ultra-rare super-sweet fruit dagashi.

But wait! Fruit dagashi is heresy! Fruit is all about fresh juiciness – that’s justice! …is what I thought, but honestly, I’m way too curious. So curious that before I knew it, here I am.

But I can’t find it anywhere. Ultra-rare super-sweet fruit dagashi, where are you?

Yuzu: Hey, why are you having a staring contest with the snack shelf?

Mia: Wha- Yuzu-senpai?! Why are you here?

Yuzu: This is one of Yuzu’s favorite places. Yuzu comes here to buy sweets all the time.

Mia: Hey, don’t read my inner monologue! Are you psychic or something?

Yuzu: What are you talking about? Yuzu is Yuzu.

Mia: …Right. Anyway, if you come here often, that makes you a regular. So – would you happen to know which one the ultra-rare super-sweet fruit dagashi is?

Yuzu: Mm-hmm, I know it. Because Yuzu loves that one too. Hang on, I’ll go find it for you.

Mia: Whoa, a true regular. When it comes to sweets and only sweets, Yuzu-senpai is incredibly dependable.

…When it comes to sweets and only sweets.

Yuzu: I’m baaack! Here – Ultra-Spicy Snack: Super Ultra-Spicy Tabasco Chips!

Yuzu: That’s right – the more you eat, the more you drool, and your mouth gets juicy-

Mia: That’s ultra-rare all right, but only because it was so spicy they discontinued it! It’s legendary in the wrong way!

Yuzu: Okay, so what about this ultra-rare one? “Fruit Mochi”?

Mia: Mochi? These tiny colorful little pellets? And they’re fruit?

Yuzu: That’s right. The green is green apple, the yellow is pineapple, and the pink is cherry.

Mia: I mean, the colors are convincing, but do they really taste like fruit?

Yuzu: You’ll understand if you try one. Here – say ahh.

Mia: Ahh. Munch munch. Mmm-

Sour! Sour! But-

Sweet! Sweet powdery snow falling over forbidden fruit… a beautiful silver landscape spreading across my heart.

Yuzu: Right? Right? Then next is this one – Whole Plum Pickled Juice. Here, give it a sip.

Mia: Sip. …Hm? This one’s sour too, but-

Sweet! The karma of a small evil my body rejects but my heart desires… soaking in down to the very last drop.

Whoaa. So they’re all sweet in the end. Fresh fruit’s got nothing on- nya-fufufu. Nyavelous. Bliss.

Yuzu: Mmm! No fair, Nyan-chan gets it all to herself. Yuzu wants to be fed too.

Mia: M-me? Feed Yuzu-senpai? Is that allowed? Really?

Yuzu: Yuzu and you are snack friends, aren’t we? So come on, feed me a new snack.

Mia: Nya-fufufu. Well then, if you insist. It’s nya-fu nya-fu time!

Both: Ahh-

(crunch)

Mia: Hm? …Ugh! Gwaaaah! Why?! Why is it the Super Ultra-Spicy Tabasco Chips?!

Yuzu: Oh no. I grabbed the wrong one.

Mia: Uuu-

Yuzu: (thud)

Mia: Don’t just go “thud”! Ugh, ggh-

Mia: …Huh. Where is this? My room?
Huh? How? What time is it? …But it’s morning.
Don’t tell me I slept the whole day?!
Oh no, I have to get to school, I’ll be late-
Wait. What about my day off?
My precious day off – where did it go?
Funyuu…

Mia: N-no good. Sorry, I can’t remember a thing after that.
The fish was worth zero.
What on earth happened that day?

Tsumugi: Ahem. Last is my turn.
Actually, the other day, I finally found a café I frequent.

Chinatsu: Wow, Tsumurin! Just like a grown-up, so cool!

Tsumugi: Not like. I am an adult.

Mia: I don’t think a grown-up would brag about having a regular café, though.

Tsumugi: Q-quiet! I hate you, Mya!

Mia: Sorry, sorry. I’ll treat you to the pancakes you love, so cheer up, okay?

Tsumugi: R-really? W-well… in that case, I suppose it can’t be helped. I’ll forgive you on account of the pancakes.

Mia: Nya-fufufu. Still a total child after all. Cute.

Chinatsu: Hey, hey, Tsumurin, how’d you find the café?

Tsumugi: Well, you see – it suddenly started raining on my way home from the library, and while I was looking for somewhere to shelter, I happened to find it.

(flashback)

Tsumugi: Ohh – it’s not just the exterior, the interior is perfect too!
Everything coordinated in an antique style, like the manor of an English noble!
And even the menu is stylish! So much English on it, and the design is so grown-up!
A great discovery! An adult’s hideaway!
Truly, a place befitting an adult such as myself!

Oh – mustn’t get carried away. Here I must order smartly, in an adult manner.

Ah! They have hot milk cocoa, my favorite! And with sweet whipped cream!
I’ve decided! Excuse me, I’d like to order-

Mysterious woman: Barista, may I order?

Tsumugi: Oh?
An adult like me won’t rush. I’ll wait patiently.
But that woman’s voice just now – so smart, so grown-up.

Mysterious woman: Delicious. A faint sweetness swaying behind the aroma. An addictive sweetness.
Another, please. A ristretto, of course.

Tsumugi: Ohhh! A ristretto!
Not just her voice – even her vocabulary is grown-up! How lovely! How cool!
She’s a complete adult onee-san!
I want to drink this “ristretto” too.
I have absolutely no idea what it is, but I want to drink a ristretto alongside the grown-up onee-san.
I have no idea what it is, but it’s cool and stylish!
The onee-san said it has sweetness, so it must surely be sweet and delicious!
Here goes-

E-excuse me, Barista. I’d like a ristretto as well.

Wow – what a wonderful aroma! It’s faint, but there really is a sweet scent.
But… is this the correct cup size? It’s so small, like a cup for a dwarf or a fairy.
Ah, I understand. This is the one adults enjoy by drinking it all in one go. I’ve seen Father do it.
Father’s was alcohol, but – no matter. Let’s enjoy it at once!

Gulp- ugh- guh!

What is this?! Far too bitter! It isn’t sweet in the slightest!
Is this genuinely a beverage for human beings?!
B-but the onee-san drank hers down. I absolutely cannot leave it just because it’s bitter.
Adult coffee – I’ll drink it to the last drop!

Gulp, gulp, gulp- ugh- guh!

Mysterious woman: Hmm, next I’d like something fruity. Barista, a Hawaiian Kona, acidic style, please.

Tsumugi: Ohh, acidity! Another grown-up word!
And fruity! Then this time, surely, I’ll be able to enjoy it!
It’s called Hawaiian, after all. It must taste like mango or banana – a sweet fruit juice in coffee form!

Barista, a Hawaiian Kona for me as well.

Ah, a normal cup this time. But this coffee… is black. Black as far as the eye can see.
No – it should be fine. The aroma is milder than before, so surely the sweet taste of fruit-

Gulp, gulp, gulp- ugh- guh!

Bitter! What is this?! It’s sour and plainly bitter, and not remotely fruity!
This is going to break my mouth! It’s wrong! There’s no way anyone can drink this!
It’s more bitter than medicine!
That cool-voiced onee-san must be regretting it right about now too-

Mysterious woman: This acidity and bitterness intertwining so exquisitely – such a gentle flavor. Truly the finest. As expected of you, Barista.

Tsumugi: Lavish praise?!
But it wasn’t gentle in the slightest! It was acidity and bitterness joining forces!
S-so this is… a taste only adults can understand!

Mysterious woman: Next I’d like to taste the beans directly. Could I get a doppio?

Tsumugi: A doppio!
Somehow I already know! That’s definitely another strange-tasting one!
B-but it’s so grown-up and cool!
I want to do it too! I want to say I’d like to taste the beans directly!
But – no more! M-Barista…! Uuu…

Mysterious woman: Ufufu. Barista, cancel the doppio – could I have a hot milk cocoa after all?

Tsumugi: Eh?

Mysterious woman: My tongue seems tired. So I’d like to rest with something sweet.

Tsumugi: M-me too! My tongue is tired!
Barista, a hot milk cocoa, please!

Mysterious woman: Ufufu.

Tsumugi: Ah – could it be that the onee-san noticed I was straining to imitate her, and changed her order for my sake?
Incredible. Far too cool! Far too much of a grown-up onee-san!
Once I finish this, I must thank her properly, in an adult manner!

But by the time I’d finished drinking, the cool-voiced onee-san was already gone.
It’s a shame I never got to see her face.
I hope I can meet her again someday.

Mia: Hey, good for you, Tsumurin. You got to meet someone really cool.
Though – you were stretching to act older again, weren’t you, Tsumurin.
That’s the part that’s cute about you, though.

Tsumugi: Quiet, Mia.
More to the point, the onee-san who helped Nacchi was a wonderfully grown-up person too, wasn’t she.

Tsumugi: Mm-hmm. From the sound of it, she was really rather like Akari-senpai – the one Nacchi loves so much.
Ah – could it actually have been Akari-senpai?

Chinatsu: Eh? I wonder if it was.
Hmm. It was pitch black, so I couldn’t see at all.

Tsumugi: It’s not very likely. Hoshizaki-senpai happening to turn up at the exact moment you got lost – that sort of coincidence doesn’t happen easily.

Tsumugi: So – Mia, can you really not remember anything?
Perhaps the feeling that something happened was just your imagination, and you simply overslept through your day off.

Mia: N-no way, that’s not it! I’m not that sloppy!
Ow-

Tsumugi: What’s wrong? Does your mouth hurt?
Could it be a mouth ulcer? Shall I get you some medicine from the nurse’s office?

Mia: N-no, I’m fine.
But why, though? The inside of my mouth has been stinging this whole time.

Chinatsu: Aww, lunch break’s over already?
Mmm, but I still want to keep talking.

Tsumugi: We have to study too. You can’t become a wonderful adult without studying.
Come now, let’s switch gears.

Mia: Shooter Fest is coming up soon, so we’ve got to work hard.
Then – we’ll continue after school.

Chinatsu: Yes, agreed!

Mia: See you later, then.
